Ukraine has filed suit against Russia in the International Court of Justice, asking it to immediately stop Russia’s military invasion of its borders.
The ICJ, located in The Hague, Netherlands, is known colloquially as the “World Court.” The president of the court is Judge Joan Donoghue, an American lawyer who has been on its bench since 2010.
In 2013, I spoke with Judge Donoghue about her job, as well as the purview of the World Court.
I note that Judge Donoghue received her undergraduate degree (with honors) in Russian Studies. So in addition to her long experience with international law, she may also have a particular interest and expertise in the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine. I will watch her court’s ruling in this matter with great interest.
